The professional development model for nursing in cancer control describes nurses’ varying contributions to all phases of the cancer continuum. It outlines the capabilities required of nurses working in different roles, in different settings and at different points along the continuum.
According to this model, ALL nurses, regardless of practice setting, are likely to have contact with people affected by cancer and will require some level of capability in cancer control. Other nurses will require specialised and / or advanced competencies in cancer control.
The dynamic and complex nature of contemporary practice environments means it is not possible to clearly define the scope of nursing practice or discrete levels of practice. Four broad groups of nursing services have been described in the EdCaN Professional Development model.
